Those crafty Snowdonnas. Since we last visited them, our favorite shoegazers were getting a lot of well-deserved press attention from as far away as L.A. and Europe for their sterling debut full-length, Over Now, and their ultra-pro live shows. This weekend, they’re bringing their icy sound to Rubber Gloves as part of a Texas dream-pop extravaganza that also features Denton’s static-y Mission Giant (celebrating the release of their third full-length, Brotherhood of the Plug), Big D’s Bring In the Satellites, San Antonio’s One Version Aversion, and some local outfit called Destination Venus.
But wait a minute. Turns out that Destination Venus is none other than — ta-dah! — the Snowdonnas’ “other” band. Here’s how it works: First, Snowdonnas frontman Tim White takes a seat on the bench and bassist Otto Bahn (gee whiz — think he’s a Kraftwerk fan?) steps up front to handle guitar and vocal duties. Then a second guitarist is added to the mix, and the goofily named Q. Bysshe Mourningstar trades in his keyboards for a bass, all while Niki Saukam continues manning the traps.
Having first coalesced in 1996, Destination Venus actually predates the Snowdonnas by half a decade. In 2001, they contributed a track to a Cure tribute compilation on Austin-based Ballyhoo Withdrawal Records. Since then, they’ve demo’d a few more tunes and are currently recording a six-song e.p., due for release this spring. Clearly Robert Smith and his somber crew are a big influence, as are Joy Division (the hulking Bahn sings in a voice so deep and mournful that he makes Ian Curtis sound downright perky) and the Damned during their later, goth-y phase. All in all, it’s great noise to make gloomy shapes to. — Ken Shimamoto
