Back in the day, we kids didn’t have kind-hearted local professional musicians to a.) look up to and b.) learn from. We had MTV. Cowtown youngsters are lucky. The Fort Worth Academy of Music, a.k.a. “Diamond” Dave Karnes and Lee Allen, will soon be holding “Rock Camp” for folks ages 12 through 18. For $375 per two-week session, young, aspiring rock stars can develop songwriting and performing skills under the tutelage of Karnes, Allen, and special guests. Camp culminates with the kids performing live at a “premier” music venue, the gig captured on video tape. For more information, check out www.fwam.org. The first session kicks off June 13. ... Last weekend’s Wreck Room benefit show for Chemistry Set bassist Cory Helms was an unqualified success. About 200 people showed up to see the Chem Set perform along with Calhoun and Collin Herring, and close to $1,200 was raised, for both the American Cancer Society and Helms, who’s battling Hodgkin’s Disease (a form of cancer). “Everybody coming out, it was a huge boost for Cory, emotionally and spiritually,” said Chem Set frontman Steve Duncan. Everybody’s favorite TCU student/Purple Cow employee/artful singer-songwriter Walker Wood celebrated the release of his forthcoming c.d. last weekend with a stripped-down show at the Moon. Contrary to his new disc’s lush, hauntingly melancholy vibe, his set was rather upbeat — lots of jangly acoustic guitars, lots of giggly between-song banter, lots of vocal support for the crowd to par-tay. Got an e-mail the other day from one of our writers, noted raconteur, beer-o-phile, bon vivant, and knower of all things Irish and Democratic and Cleveland-based, the inimitable Dan McGraw. (If you haven’t seen this tall, red-faced lad around town, you’ve more than likely heard him. He talks — a lot.) Danny boy says he was shocked and appalled on learning that none of the dozens upon dozens of artists in this year’s Main Street Arts Festival was from Fort Worth. “My thought is that the festival should at least give about 10 booths for locals at a cheap price — even if off the street in some parking lot.” There’s a good explanation, according to Downtown Fort Worth Inc., the organization that oversees Main Street. More than 1,000 applications are received for 200 spots, and a blind jury selects the best of the best, regardless of artist origin. Reminds HearSay of the philosophy of “The Good Show,” on 88.7-FM/KTCU (Sunday nights, from 9-midnight). Tom and Chris (and Tony) always play local songs — not because they’re local, but because they’re good. As any worth-a-shit artist knows, there’s nothing more offensive than being patronized. ... Happy belated birthday to Darth Vato. The reggae-rockers celebrated their third birthday this past weekend, with a packed show at the Moon. Catch the boys — and buy all three of the self-described back-stabbing pinche gringos a shot (or five) — next Thursday, April 28, at the Aardvark, on a bill with FTL.
