If you haven’t heard, the famous NYC nightclub CBGB is about to go under, and Mavs owner Mark Cuban has expressed interest in trying to save the dump. Here’s HearSay’s two cents: CBGB hasn’t been worth a shit in — what? — 30 years. Ask any musician who’s ever played the joint, and you’ll discover that not only does the sound suck but the drinks are expensive. What’s worse is that the club is not some victim of circumstance; the owner owes, like, $80,000 in back rent. Best-case scenario involves dignity and a wrecking ball. Save your money, Mark. Or put it toward something worthwhile, like a record label for North Texas artists. ... Reminder: The fundraiser for Chemistry Set’s cancer-stricken bass player Cory Helms is Friday, at the Wreck Room. To a bill that includes Collin Herring, Tim Locke, and the Chemistry Set add The Hundred Inevitables, the power-pop group that features John Dufilho (The Deathray Davies) and Toby Pipes, brother of Todd Pipes, both of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and Bass Propulsion Laboratories fame. Proceeds benefit Helms and the American Cancer Society.
