Solo Together
Carey Wolff and Scott Copeland say they are a solo duo: Every Friday at the Wreck Room’s happy hour they alternate songs. During their live acoustic sets, Wolff is the straight man, churning out mostly earnest modern-rock originals (save for the occasional Tenacious D cover), laying the serious-listening mood on thick. Copeland’s the funny guy, partial to that old-timey pickin’ and grinnin’ and peripatetic tales in between numbers. Like his segue into a new song last week: Seems that while cruising Texas, Copeland had stopped at an A&W Root Beer fast-food joint, where he promptly ordered a small Dr. Pepper. The girl behind the counter told him they didn’t have a small size, only a medium and large — “which one do you want?” “Well,” Copeland recalled, “a medium means it’s between something,” and, he went on, “your medium isn’t between anything!” What was really funny was that nobody laughed after the bit until Copeland laughed at himself and his wild, wild story, and then everybody started yucking it up. I guess you hadda be there. But basically: Seeing Wolff and Copeland perform live is a good, good thing. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll — most importantly — be entertained.
The tandem has been appearing at the Wreck for the past six months; Copeland had been holding it down there by his lonesome for a few months before that. For the past year, they’ve also been playing together at Ridglea Theater, in the “lounge.” Wolff told HearSay that he and Copeland are “already feudin’ like brothers.” Ahh, family.
There’s supposed to be a comp c.d. in the works, featuring numbers by Wolff, Copeland, and Andy Pate of his eponymous band, a Thirsty Armadillo regular. HearSay will keep you posted on the when’s and where’s of the disc’s release.
A little tidbit worth noting: Wolff is the mastermind behind Woodeye, a supremely talented, five-and-a-half-year-old rock band renowned for its lack of motivation. (Anywhere you go, you can hear stories about how Woodeye could make it big if only they’d get their shit together. Could there be a higher compliment for a local outfit?) And a lot of the material Wolff performs acoustically comes from the Woodeye repertoire. So here you have the main songwriter for a local favorite dedicating a lot of his time to solo work: Could this spell the shutting of W-O-O-D-E-Y-E?
Probably not — though Wolff told HearSay that Woodeye will be taking a little break this summer, as their drummer’s wife is expecting their second child. The band’s next performance will be June 28 at the Ridglea, opening for Slobberbone.
So in case you missed it: Satiate your jones for Woodeye tunes — and funny stories — Thursdays at Ridglea or Fridays at the Wreck. You will thank me.
