The Dead Will Go On
For the last 10 years, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth has been the site of the area’s largest celebration of El Día de los Muertos. However, that event, like all the other museum’s regular events in the past year, has been canceled due to all the work involved with the museum’s remodeling. Thus, people looking to celebrate this joyful Mexican holiday honoring the dead will have to go elsewhere this year.
Fortunately, there is somewhere to go. A two-day event will take place at Arts Fifth Avenue in the neighborhood around Fairmount Park, a much funkier place than the Modern’s front lawn. Friday evening (the Night of the Angels, not to be confused with the winged ones who are celebrating a World Series victory) offers something for those with a studious bent, with workshops on mask-making, papier-mâché, folklórico dance, and designing altars that are intended as shrines to those who have passed on. The following evening — All Soul’s Day — is more for those who are in a partying mood. There will be performances of folklórico, mural painting, poetry readings, a parade, and an art exhibit. Plus, there’ll be traditional food — gotta get some of that sweet, tasty pan de los muertos. Meanwhile, plan to scope out the new Modern next month and try to figure out how El Día de los Muertos 2003 might go.
