Growls from the CAVE
To the editor: My few encounters with Becky Haskins, my council member, have been less than gratifying. It is my firm opinion that the Fort Worth City Council and mayor are out of control, and Becky Haskins epitomizes the attitudes that have produced a long string of bad decisions. It appears that, for the most part, Ms. Haskins — and most of the council — have no concept of representing the citizens in their districts. This is a council and mayor that created a giant slush fund in the Fort Worth housing finance corporation (“Whitecaps on White Lake,” Sept. 1, 2004) out of taxpayers’ money, to invest in any capricious manner they deem necessary.
Among the other bad decisions that have plagued Forth Worth in the last few years are the terrible trash collection system, attempts to put Fort Worth into the hotel business and the Mexican market business, and — the latest — a tax abatement (give-away) for the old Montgomery Ward building. Now they want to go into the land investment business on White Lake.
My concept of city government is one that concentrates on services and sound policies. I don’t want a city government that is, for the most part, a finance corporation/tax abatement machine that uses my money to help big business, ignores constituents, and calls people names (“CAVE people”) who disagree with the council and mayor. It’s not too early to begin planning to unelect these people.
