Tattoo This:Don’t Get Towed

Talk about a bunch of fuddy-duddies. In the last few weeks Arlington officials have banned an educational zoo exhibit at a mall, proposed an ordinance that would prevent the placing of dollar bills in exotic dancers’ G-strings; and considered restricting tattoo parlors and body piercing shops after residents whined that one shop was selling tobacco pipes used for — gasp! — smoking marijeewana. On the other hand, city officials are willing to listen to a towing company that wants to jack up rates.

Bad news: City staff has recommended you be charged $167 if your car is towed. Worse news: Kelly McKnight Wrecking Services says it needs even more — $195 per tow. Worst news: Fort Worth towing rates could soon go as high or higher.

Crying in Their Beer

“Happy days are here again,” was not echoing ’round the Fox & Hound last Tuesday night. Local Democrats, with their multi-colored dream team at the top of the state ticket and a take-no-prisoners candidate for D.A. , had rented the entire pub hoping for a victory party and, finally, some respect.

What most of ’em got that night was, well, drunk.

The Main Street pub was packed with local Dems swigging beer or margaritas (or beer and margaritas), back-slapping, glad-handing, and chatting up would-be D.A. slayer Terri Moore — who wouldn’t know how bad she lost until late the next day, thanks to a crew of election administration nerds who have now given Florida and Tarrant County something more in common than a couple of Bushes.

Former Speaker of the House Jim Wright, the golden oldie of the party’s glory days, was holding court on the balcony, but by 9 p.m. he knew the party was over. Past his bedtime, he said, raising his famous bushy eyebrows. “He always did know when to fold ’em,” someone said.

Fort Worth council member Jim Lane, meanwhile, was over at city hall talking trash (haulers). Puffing himself as a “yellow dog Democrat,” Lane had chastised the council for not canceling its night meeting so he could watch returns with his fellow donkeys. Just as well. Lane’s name was mud in that crowd for supporting Republican D.A. Tim Curry. Lane missed a good party — and the talk about who would be running against him next election.
