The Curtain Club

A few years ago, a couple of record store buds took me to see Bedhead and Funland. While Bedhead proved to be accurately named (zzzzzz!), Funland were, I thought, the best local band I’d ever seen, putting me in mind of a less-inebriated and chaotic version of the Replacements.
Post-Funland, Clark Vogler joined the Toadies, after spending some time maintaining a web site dedicated to Fort Worth-Dallas pizza joints, while madman drummer Will Johnson reinvented himself as the head Centro-Matic dude. Frontguy Peter Schmidt, meanwhile, went off and founded Legendary Crystal Chandelier (who’ve shortened their name to LCC — because they were tired of spelling it out). Schmidt’s got songwriting chops aplenty, even if lately he does kinda sing like one of those Britcreeps like Morrissey or Ian Curtis whom I used to hate so much.
If you’re a rockwrite obsessive like me, you’ll appreciate a band whose web site includes practically no info about the band per se but does include reviews of other peep’s records like stuff from the Flamin’ Groovies, Ultravox, Rod “Pile-on-the-Makeup” Stewart, Shannon Wright, the Kinks, Nick Lowe ... you get the idea.
Turns out the page is indicative of the band’s sound, which is not to say LCC is directly influenced by any of the above. What they are is eclectic as hell. The music on their Quality Park c.d. Indifference ranges from electro-rock weirdness á la Radiohead (or, if you’re an oldster, Pink Floyd) to industrial-lite noise á la early Nine Inch Nails, even a soupcon of the pure rock crunch that made live Funland such a, um, fun band. One song actually reminds me of some weird hybrid of Pet Sounds and the Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle, always a popular mix at my house. Should be fairly hypnotic live.
