The Wreck Room

By Ken Shimamoto

Ah, stoner-rock. The hair flies, the Marshalls roar, the dry ice smokes.

A while back, an acquaintance of mine from Dallas, who was trying to arrange gigs for bands that had been left in the lurch by the demise of Billy’s, booked a stoner-rock band called Delicious at the bottom of a Dead Sexy bill at Bar of Soap. “I wanna try booking some more eclectic shows,” she said. Later, after Delicious performed, you could hear people in the crowd wonder out loud: “Who the fuck was that hippie band?”

It’s true: Either you love heavy music or you hate it.

If you like your music in shades of Black (as in Sabbath) and Blue (as in Cheer), you’ll wanna catch these unlikely Dentonites when they storm the Wreck Room this weekend. Dixie Witch has all the elements: the double bass and guitar figures, the patented Tony Iommi fuzzball rifferama, the classic Bill Ward crash and thump. Which is not to say that they’re Sabbath clones exclusively. In fact, their occasional infusion of near-punk energy into the heavy mix puts one in mind of recently disbanded worthies Spirit Caravan. (Is the title of the Witch’s only full-length, Into the Sun, a Grand Funk Railroad reference or a coinky-dink? Hmmm.) The Witch should be hot, too, as they’ll be winding up a month of shows in Arizona, California, and Texas.

FYI: Listening to these guys makes me think of my misspent youth in another zipcode, where, at the time, there were as many Mountain clones (fat guy in a leather coat playing a Les Paul Jr., causing young children to ask, “Mommy, how can such a big, big man play such an itty-bitty guitar?”) as there used to be Stevie Ray rip-offs around these parts a couple seasons ago.

Crank it up to 11.
