Aardvark

When pondering how to succeed in the rock biz, it’s important not to underestimate the value of “just hanging around” — provided it’s in the right places, where the right people go. For proof positive, just ask the boys in Morning Overboard, a Fort Worth-based band that’s only been together since the beginning of this year but has already seen plenty of live action in venues like 7th Haven, the Wreck Room, and the Aardvark.

Morning Overboard frontman Matt Dearden and his guitarist pal Brad Nicol spent a couple of years kicking around in various local prog/alt-rock outfits before they recruited drummer Nick Covarrubias and ex-Leroy the Prophet bassist Marcus Gonzalez to play some songs the masterminds had written. The four became regular hangers-out at the Cellar, where they got friendly with local heavies like Aardvark/Moon impresario Danny Weaver and rock-god-in-training John Price, who likes nothing better than to offer opening slots on his shows to promising new bands.

The former Cellar-dwellers play a crunchy brand of modern pop-rock, inspired by Fort Worth-Dallas bands like Doosu, Flickerstick, and Jibe. Back in February, they cut a three-song demo with Bart Rose at First Street Audio that’s been receiving airplay on the UTA and TCU student stations. They started playing out the following month. Currently, they have 14 originals written and plan to head back into the studio in August to finish recording an e.p. with a mysterious personage Dearden describes as “a prominent local producer.”

So if you’re looking for someplace to hang out on Friday the 13th, you could do worse than spending the evening with Morning Overboard at the Aardvark. There’s no telling who else will be there, and who knows. Even if you’re not a musician, you might, um, get lucky.

Fri at the Aardvark, 2905 W Berry, FW. 817-926-7814.
