Edgewater
By Justin Press
Melodic rock bands are a dime a dozen, but there aren’t many whose frontmen fully enunciate their lyrics. Why? Most of the other guys’ lyrics are crap and probably deserve to be buried beneath mounds of macho groaning. Not so Edgewater. The Dallas-based band’s brand of smart, catchy thud would likely appeal to a wider audience. Even though they’re still finding their footing in North Texas, they’re getting by on heavy word-of-mouth, and — like Element 80, Legends of the South, and a few other high-caliber Metroplex metalists — Edgewater puts on a helluva show.
The irony is that the guys in Edgewater can make their arena-rock anthems fit inside snug clubs. Tracks like “Inhale,” “Quitter,” and the ex-radio fave “Eyes Wired Shut” — all off the band’s debut, last year’s South of Sideways — work just as well in front of five people as 500. Simply, most of the Edgewater’s songs command attention.
What’s unfortunate is that the band isn’t extreme enough in either direction of rock ’n’ roll to get a decent break. Edgewater is too heavy to compete against vanilla metal heads like Nickelback and Three Doors Down yet not heavy enough to appeal to the underground’s skaters and goths. No matter: Edgewater remains devoted to its own, singular sound.
The opening act, Fort Worth’s Driven, churns out a similar version of Big Rawk but one tinged with wild abandon and a flair for the dramatic. But, hey, if it’s not killing anybody and it “rawks,” then it’s all good.
