Nutcracker Anew

By Leonard Eureka

If you missed Fort Worth/Dallas Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker (reviewed in “Sweet Ol’ Pace,” Dec. 12-18, 2002), a bunch of other ones crop up this week. It didn’t take long for Alexander Vetrov, Ballet Arlington’s new co-artistic director, to put together another Nutcracker for the company. It’s only his first Christmas in the post, and the ballet’s old shopworn scenery, which did its duty for five years, is out. It is his debut as a designer, with scenery built in Dallas. Costumes are being flown in from Moscow, U.S. Customs permitting, and all-new choreography, based mostly on the Yuri Grigorovich version created for the Bolshoi Ballet, will be featured. Vetrov studied with the choreographer and danced in the Moscow production. Vetrov will dance the role of Drosselmeyer, the wizard, here.

Young Clara, around whom the story revolves, will be danced by an adult instead of a youngster. The character dances in the second act, made famous by the orchestral suite from the Tchaikovsky score, are dolls now in national costumes, in keeping with the Toyland atmosphere of the Land of Sweets.

The company’s regular array of Russian-trained dancers will alternate roles Friday through Sunday. Mindaugas Bauzys and his wife, Vilija Putriute-Bauziene, returning from guest appearances as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier in Austin, will dance the roles here, as will Marina Goshko and Andre Prikhodko, just back from doing the same in Denver. A third couple, Maria Kudyakova and Alexander Krivonos, another husband and wife duo, will also perform.

The Texas Chamber Orchestra, led by James Rives-Jones, is set to accompany the performances.

7:30pm Fri-Sat, 2pm Sat-Sun at Texas Hall at UTA, 701 W Nedderman Dr, Arlington. $10-45. 817-272-3101.
