Slouching toward Sapristi!

Though Last Call is no slouch in the wine department, yours truly is the furthest thing from a bona fide sommelier. Always on the hunt for more intimate knowledge of the grapes of wrath, Last Call frequents a handful of local bars/restaurants whose management teams seem to know what the hell they’re doing, oenifically speaking. (While the good wine-friendly folks at Central Market are always very helpful, there’s just something about heaving a cart weighed down with bottles of red and bottles of white through the supermarket in front of all those uppity types that gives Last Call the creeps. Hey, we all know I’m a functioning alcoholic. No need to publicize the fact under harsh lighting in person.)
One of your columnist’s favorite places for “tutorials” is Sapristi!, a neighborhood bistro in Forest Park where manager Jenny Kornblum stocks a modest selection of more than 50 labels — all available for retail purchase (at half-off the menu price) and more than 20 offered by the glass ($5-$9). Last Call visited recently and scored. While your columnist’s partner was chowing down on a cereal bowl full of mussels in pesto, Last Call downed a couple of glasses of Mark West pinot noir (at roughly $7 a pop) and left the building with a bottle of Avalon cabernet (for around $14). And that’s the best part. If during your visit, you — for whatever strange, outlandish reason — can’t finish your bottle, you can take the thing with you. “Clean up, aisle 2!”
