Keep It Creative
To the editor: Jon Keeyes could not have said it better! Fort Worth is in need of more for the younger crowd (“Creative Class Struggle,” July 14, 2004). It is not only having an area of town to call our own. More people need reasons not to visit Dallas and Austin for things to do, but to stay in Fort Worth for whatever is happening that week or weekend. We are so fortunate to have the fabulous museums for exposing the community (all ages) and people from out of town to amazing art and to Fort Worth. Keeyes is right; you can count on one hand as a young person (or person with a babysitter) what your options are for an evening out in Fort Worth.
I moved here recently from Austin, and Ken Schaumburg is also right — we don’t want to be Austin, and Fort Worth is a great place to live. However, I don’t want just a reason to buy a house or loft, but also reasons to get me out of the house and experience the local culture Fort Worth has to offer. It isn’t just about where we live, but how we are living! Austin doesn’t have our museums, but it does have many activities and festivals that bring all ages out for music, food, and art — things that keep young people there despite the cost of living. Austin supports its young people and finds ways to keep growing with them. One example is its “First Thursday” each month, when locals and visitors are exposed to all kinds of artisans who can’t afford to have a shop or to market their work.
I hope Fort Worth can keep its own “creative class.”
