Ever since I saw the cover of Herb Alpert’s Whipped Cream and Other Delights at the ripe age of six, I knew that women and music belonged together like air and the stars. There’s a reason that the acoustic guitar is shaped like an hourglass.

Fortunately for those who share this belief, two excellent — and lovely — women musicians with area connections are part of this month’s Acoustic Mafia. Fort Worth native April is a pixie with a knack for pop melodies that evoke a youthful Joni Mitchell. Her 2004 album In Other Words has a folk-on-the-run sound that shows that she is, according to her web site, “moving towards more of a pop sound but will always hang to a certain side of folk music.” Her constant gigging and affable persona remind you that not all singer-songwriters just wait around for their big break. Some actually log lots of miles.

Kentuckian Megan McCallon, on the other hand, veers more towards of the tough blues-based rock and Americana of Sheryl Crow. It’s wistful but full of grit. Songs like “Hold On” and the title track to her most recent platter, Missing Pieces, cut to the heart of a woman drawing inner strength from her inability to find love and ability to survive without it. The disc was recorded with Dallas-based band Barefoot.

Much of acoustic music’s strength comes from relatively quiet yet dramatic moments and reflections. With a rebirth of sorts in singer-songwriter rock over the last eight years, audiences are warming to the idea that maybe a guy or gal with a guitar isn’t really that mushy. Because in today’s noisy world, sometimes it’s in the low registers that you hear the most powerful things.
