Jason Eklund and Kell Robertson
By Anthony Mariani
This one goes out to all of Funkytown’s hippies-cum-parents who just can’t let go of the Summer of Love, and to their teen-age children who just wanna dance, dance, dance. This week, each camp will have an opportunity to show the other “what the hell real music is, goddammit.” The old-heads can propose a patio performance at Fred’s Café by Jason Eklund and Kell Robertson — Robertson’s really old and is known for making populist, spoken-wordish poetry; Eklund’s kinda young and has some sort of below-the-radar rep as a professional musician. The two will be playing tunes, spewing radical invective, and otherwise tilting Fort Worth as far left as it’ll go. (That rumbling noise you hear is the sound of 200 pairs of young eyeballs rolling.)
For the chillun — if they can rouse their folks from sleep (a.k.a. the achievement of temporary coma via copious amounts of alcohol) — auditions are being held early Monday morning in Dallas for a spot on MTV’s Making the Band, a really dumb, pointless, gratuitous, reality-televisionist exercise in cultural retardation that we thought had died from bad ratings years ago but somehow still exists. It’s like The Apprentice, but instead of aspiring corporate types, the competitors are several teenyboppers thrown together as a boy-/girl-band; and instead of The Donald, “Pee” Diddy — no slouch in the asshole department himself — serves as the authority figure, insulting his charges frequently, acting tough, and generally making a great argument on behalf of a law that should be passed to separate déclassé shitheels from huge amounts of money.
More information: Parents and kids, take heed: There is hope that throughout all of this you all will achieve some sort of meeting of the minds. On Saturday, 20 bands on three stages will perform to help raise money for The Chemistry Set’s Cory Helms, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease; a portion of the proceeds will go toward the American Cancer Society. The bill includes The Theater Fire, Salim Nourallah, The Happy Bullets, The Record Hop, Sara Radle, Steve Duncan, and Chris Holt, among others. For more information, go to Helms’ on-line presence, www.myspace.com/benefitforcory. Old-heads, if you need help finding the site, either belly up to that “tv connected to a typewriter” (it’s called a compuuuuuter) and figure it out yourself or simply ask your kids — unless they’ve stopped speaking to you again for dragging them to Fred’s.
Jason Eklund and Kell Robertson perform Thu at Fred’s Café, 915 Currie St, FW. Donations accepted. 817-332-0083. Making the Band auditions are on Mon, Jun 6, at Club Uropa, 2600 Main St, Dallas.
