Ride on the Peace Train
When the Weekly wrote about Crawford, the Waco-area burg outside which Dubya has his “Western White House,” townspeople mostly were having little to do with the Peace House, even turning down donations to charities from the anti-war activists who’ve settled in for the duration (“Peace on the Prairie,” Aug. 25, 2004). Now, however, it seems that some high school kids have grasped the olive branch. While the Peace House, established by Dallas activist Johnny Wolf, rubs many of the town’s conservative residents the wrong way, the students in Misti Turbeville’s American history class asked their teacher if they could go see it. According to the Lone Star Iconoclast, the resulting field trip was an educational experience for both sides. Activists Paul McDaniel and Josh Collier talked to students about the importance of forming their own opinions. Iconoclast reporter Nathan Diebenow said the gathering was very civil, and a right step for town-House relations. “The town is opening up to the Peace House a little bit,” he said. “The kids may tell their parents about the experience and open up more dialogue between folks.” As for the future of the Peace House, Diebenow says Wolf is considering donating the property to the town if Dubya loses the election in November.
